A lawn mower range should be built around the customers a dealer actually serves. A walk-behind mower and a riding mower may both cut grass, but they solve very different jobs and occupy different price, storage and service positions.

This article compares the two categories from a dealer perspective so you can decide which models belong in an entry, core and premium product range.

Start by Segmenting the Customer

For smaller gardens, narrow access and price-sensitive buyers, a hand-push or self-propelled mower is usually easier to position. For larger lawns, estates, commercial properties or buyers who value operator comfort, a riding mower becomes more relevant.

A dealer should therefore avoid comparing only engine displacement. The more useful questions are: how much area must be cut, how often, how wide are access points, what happens to the clippings, and how much storage space does the customer have?

Where a Walk-Behind Mower Fits

The MLBE ML20S is a compact petrol mower aimed at customers who need manoeuvrability and a conventional lawn-care format. Its current specification table lists a 196cc Loncin OHV engine, self-propelled drive and adjustable cutting height.

Walk-behind machines can be easier to stock and transport, and they generally suit a broader entry-level customer base. They are also practical for dealers who want a simpler service proposition.

Where a Riding Mower Fits

Riding mowers suit larger areas where operator time becomes a major part of the buying decision. MLBE’s current riding range includes the ML-38GML452, ML-42GML452 and ML-42SML452, all using a 452cc Loncin engine with electric start and hydraulic drive.

The 38-inch and 42-inch deck options give dealers two clear size tiers. The collector models use a 285-litre grass catcher, while the side-discharge model serves buyers who prioritise continuous mowing over collection.

Cutting Width Is a Sales Tool

Cutting width should be linked directly to lawn size and access. A wider deck can reduce mowing time in open areas, but it can become inconvenient around trees, narrow gates or landscaped sections.

Dealers can make the range easier to sell by presenting cutting width as a progression: compact walk-behind for tighter spaces, wider self-propelled models for medium properties, and riding mowers for larger areas.

Grass Handling Changes the Customer Experience

Collection, mulching and side discharge each solve different needs. Collection creates a cleaner finish but requires emptying the catcher. Mulching reduces handling but depends on grass condition and mowing frequency. Side discharge supports faster open-area mowing but may not suit every property.

Before placing a wholesale order, confirm which grass-handling functions are standard on each model rather than assuming every mower in a family has the same configuration.

Build a Three-Level Dealer Range

Range position Suitable machine Buyer profile
Entry / core Walk-behind petrol mower Homeowners, garden shops, smaller properties
Mid-range Self-propelled wider-deck mower Larger residential properties and frequent users
Premium 38–42 inch riding mower Large lawns, estates, commercial property maintenance

What Dealers Should Confirm Before Ordering

  • engine brand and displacement,
  • cutting width and height-adjustment range,
  • drive type,
  • collector capacity or discharge arrangement,
  • blade and belt references,
  • packing dimensions and assembly requirements,
  • fast-moving spare parts, and
  • target-market safety or emissions requirements.

For larger lawns, compare the MLBE 38-inch and 42-inch riding mower range. Check the drive system, cutting width and grass-handling configuration for the selected model before ordering.

Lawn Mower Dealer Specification Matrix

A distributor’s purchase decision should be based on intended customer use and actual service requirements, not only the mower’s advertised cutting width. Use the same data fields when comparing walk-behind and riding models.

Specification Dealer checks
Cutting system Working width, cutting-height adjustment, blade type and collection, mulching or discharge options.
Movement and terrain Push, self-propelled or riding configuration; drive system; suitability for the intended ground conditions.
Operator safeguards Fitted guards and safety controls, instructions, and restrictions on slopes or obstacles.
Maintenance Replacement blades, belts, filters, service access and the exact model’s inspection requirements.
Delivery and assembly Packing dimensions, assembly scope, initial setup and after-sales training material.

Build Stock Around Real Customer Segments

For smaller lawns and limited storage space, compare compact walk-behind options; for larger maintained grounds, investigate appropriate drive and cutting arrangements. Do not claim that a riding mower is suitable for a particular slope or operating condition without model-specific evidence and the manual. Ask for a practical demonstration where the application is demanding.

MLBE can discuss OEM presentation and a standard 20-unit minimum order quantity for agricultural and garden machinery, subject to the selected models. See the current mower category when preparing a dealer assortment.
