Importing petrol generators is not simply a matter of finding the lowest unit price. For an importer or generator dealer, a successful product range needs to balance power output, generator configuration, reliability, operating cost, spare parts availability, local market requirements and landed cost.

A generator that looks attractive in a quotation may become difficult to sell if the rated power is unclear, the frequency does not match the market, spare parts are difficult to obtain, or the supplier cannot maintain consistent quality across repeat orders.

This guide explains the main factors Indian petrol generator importers, wholesalers and dealers should examine before placing a wholesale order. You can also compare the current MLBE gasoline generator range or review our dedicated petrol generator supplier page for India for wholesale, OEM and dealer-supply information.

Use this guide to choose your product specification and dealer range. If you already have a model shortlist, move to the petrol generator supplier evaluation guide to assess the evidence behind each quotation. Before confirming the order, use the pre-deposit generator checklist to record the agreed details.

How should an importer choose a petrol generator?

Choose a petrol generator by matching its rated output and electrical configuration to the intended customer applications, then compare sample performance, spare-parts support and total delivered cost. Ask for rated and maximum output separately. Confirm runtime with its test load, and approve the exact model specification before a bulk order. A model number or headline maximum-power figure is not enough to compare products.

1. Start With the Customer, Not the Generator Model

Before selecting a petrol generator, determine who will eventually buy it. Different customers require very different generator specifications.

A small shop looking for emergency backup power may have completely different requirements from a contractor powering tools at a construction site. Typical petrol generator applications can include small-business backup power, farms and rural properties, workshops, temporary work sites, mobile service businesses, retail shops and emergency electricity supply.

For dealers, this means it is often better to build a product range covering several power levels rather than importing only one generator size. Compact 2–3 kW portable generators can serve customers who value portability and moderate output, while higher-output petrol generators can target workshops, businesses and applications requiring more simultaneous loads.

2. Rated Power Is More Important Than the Model Number

One of the most common purchasing mistakes is assuming that the number in a generator model name represents its continuous usable output. It may not.

Importers should always ask the supplier for rated AC output, maximum or surge output, voltage, frequency, phase, engine displacement, rated engine speed and alternator specification.

Rated power indicates the output the generator is designed to supply during normal operation. Maximum output is generally available only for shorter periods or temporary load increases. Dealers should therefore sell generators primarily according to rated output rather than maximum output.

For example, the MLBE ML2500 Series portable gasoline generator lists rated and maximum output separately depending on configuration. The model name itself should never replace the specification table.

3. Confirm Voltage and Frequency Before Ordering

Voltage and frequency need to be confirmed before production, especially when sourcing generators for different export markets. An exporter may manufacture 50 Hz and 60 Hz versions, different voltage versions and different outlet or socket configurations.

Do not assume that the configuration used for another country will automatically be suitable for India. Before approving the order, provide the supplier with your intended market specification and ask them to confirm it on the quotation, proforma invoice, production specification, product label and user manual.

A written specification helps reduce the risk of receiving a shipment that cannot be sold in the intended market.

4. Compare Conventional and Inverter Petrol Generators

Not every customer needs the same generator technology.

Conventional petrol generators

Traditional open-frame petrol generators are often suitable where customers prioritise higher output per unit of purchasing cost, straightforward mechanical construction, work-site applications, tools and general electrical loads, larger fuel tanks and longer operating time.

Inverter petrol generators

An inverter petrol generator can be attractive when customers value lower noise, compact size, portability, stable electricity, sensitive electronic equipment and lower total harmonic distortion.

For example, the MLBE ML2500iS inverter gasoline generator is positioned as a compact inverter option with a published rated and maximum output and low THD specification. This illustrates why inverter generators and conventional generators often serve different retail segments.

5. Check Engine and Alternator Specifications

The engine and alternator are two of the most important components in a portable petrol generator.

Importers should ask for engine displacement, engine model, starting system, fuel-consumption data, oil capacity, maintenance intervals, air-filter specification and spark-plug specification. For the alternator, check winding material, voltage regulation, rated output, insulation information and overload protection.

When comparing two quotations, ensure both suppliers are quoting comparable configurations. A cheaper generator with a different alternator, smaller engine, simplified control panel or lower component specification is not necessarily an equivalent product.

6. Runtime Should Always Include the Test Load

Statements such as “12 hours runtime” are incomplete unless the load condition is provided. Fuel consumption changes according to the electrical load placed on the generator.

Always ask: runtime at what percentage of rated load? A statement such as “up to 12 hours at 50% load under specified test conditions” is much more useful than simply stating “12-hour generator”.

Dealers should use the same principle in catalogues and online product listings. Accurate technical marketing reduces misunderstandings after sale.

7. Think About Logistics Before Choosing the Model

Importers should consider the generator as a shipping unit, not only as a machine. Important logistics data include net weight, gross weight, carton dimensions, units per pallet, container loading quantity, packaging reinforcement, spare-parts cartons and destination port.

A heavy open-frame generator may offer good value per kW but require more shipping space. A compact inverter generator may carry a higher purchasing cost per kW but can be easier for dealers to transport, display and sell.

This is why the lowest EXW or FOB price does not always result in the lowest commercial cost.

8. Calculate Landed Cost, Not Only Factory Price

The actual cost of an imported petrol generator can include supplier price, export handling, freight, insurance, customs-related charges, applicable duties and taxes, compliance or testing costs, customs-broker charges, port charges, inland transport, financing cost and warranty reserve.

Importers should compare quotations using the same Incoterm and configuration. Do not compare an EXW quotation directly with a CIF quotation and conclude that one supplier is cheaper.

9. Verify India-Specific Compliance Before Shipment

Compliance should be checked before a bulk order, not after the container arrives.

India has specific environmental and product-compliance frameworks that may apply to generator products. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) publishes requirements and procedures relevant to generator-set emissions, while the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) maintains information on compulsory certification and Quality Control Orders.

Requirements can depend on the exact generator design, output, engine and product classification. Importers should confirm the latest requirements with the relevant Indian authority, approved test agency or qualified compliance consultant before shipment.

Do not assume that CE or another export-market certificate automatically replaces an Indian requirement.

Documents worth requesting from the supplier include the product specification sheet, engine specification, wiring diagram, product label artwork, test reports, packing list, commercial invoice, relevant certificate information, user manual and spare-parts list.

10. Order a Sample Before a Large Shipment

A sample should be treated as a technical evaluation unit rather than simply a showroom sample. Testing can include cold starting, hot starting, rated-load operation, load changes, temporary maximum load, output voltage, frequency stability, noise, vibration, fuel leakage, oil leakage, control-panel operation, circuit protection and packaging quality.

If you plan to distribute the product nationally, consider testing more than one machine or inspecting random units from mass production. A perfect sample does not automatically prove that every production batch will be identical.

11. Ask About Spare Parts Before Asking About Warranty

A warranty is only useful if a distributor can actually repair the generator. Before ordering, ask for a recommended spare-parts list covering common maintenance and repair items.

Depending on the generator, these may include air filters, spark plugs, carburettor components, recoil starters, switches, AVR components, fuel-system parts, ignition components, control-panel parts and gaskets.

Also ask how quickly replacement parts can be supplied after the original shipment. See MLBE generator spare parts for related product support.

12. Build a Petrol Generator Range Instead of a Single SKU

For many dealers, a range can be more commercially useful than a single generator model.

Segment Possible Product Type Typical Buyer Priority
Entry portable Approx. 2–3 kW conventional Affordability and portability
Premium portable Approx. 2 kW inverter Lower noise and clean power
Medium output Approx. 5–6 kW conventional Business and workshop backup
Higher output Approx. 7–9 kW conventional Additional load capacity

MLBE’s existing generator portfolio includes compact portable units, inverter generators and larger petrol generator configurations. Importers can therefore discuss a broader product mix rather than relying on only one specification. The MLBE ML10000(E) gasoline generator range provides an example of the higher-output side of the portfolio.

What information should you send with a generator enquiry?

Use the following checklist when requesting comparable quotations from MLBE or another supplier. Mark undecided items as “to be confirmed” so they can be resolved before production.

  • Market and application: destination country, customer type and intended equipment or loads.
  • Electrical specification: required rated output, voltage, frequency, phase and outlet configuration.
  • Product configuration: conventional or inverter design, starting system and required accessories.
  • Quantity and branding: first-order quantity, model mix, packaging and any private-label requirements.
  • Verification: required sample, test evidence and agreed inspection criteria.
  • After-sales support: manuals, model-matched spare parts and the proposed service process.
  • Delivery: destination port or delivery location and requested quotation basis.

FAQ

What size petrol generator should an importer stock?

There is no single ideal size. Dealers should select power ranges according to the customer groups they serve. A combination of compact portable units and larger conventional models can address different applications.

Is maximum generator output the same as rated output?

No. Rated output is the more important figure for normal operation. Maximum output is normally intended for shorter-duration demand.

Is a petrol generator the same as a gasoline generator?

Yes. “Petrol generator” is commonly used in India, Australia and the UK, while “gasoline generator” is common in North America and many international supplier catalogues.

Should Indian importers check CPCB and BIS requirements?

Yes. Importers should verify the latest product-specific requirements before shipping because applicability depends on the generator type and current regulations.
